Styling Black Leggings for Summer

Moms and leggings can go together like salt and pepper, right?

Some wear them more than others but we can’t deny a pair of leggings is a necessity in a mom’s wardrobe.

I’m not really a leggings person. Cool joggers, YES! But leggings? HMMM. Years ago, if I was wearing leggings it meant that I was cleaning or running a super quick errand before showering, maybe working out? Fast forward a few years, add two kids into the picture and what am I wearing today? Leggings.

I won’t lie and tell you that I wear them all the time. The truth is that I probably have two or three pairs and still wear them for the things mentioned above. However, life with two kids is getting a little (lot) crazier, add to that,  a husband, a house, creating blog content and my poor brain can’t handle getting dressed.

That’s why I’ve recently started to surrender to wearing them more. When I started, right after Ben’s birth, it was easy due to the cold temperatures. A nice bomber or leather jacket and leggings would take on another meaning. But with the temperatures rising a jacket is not possible anymore, so I’ve been trying to find a stylish way to wear them in summer – a way that I actually want to go out of the house in. At least on the cooler days.

Let’s start with the leggings. I only go for high-waisted ones because they are like the holy grail for postpartum days. That way my loose skin doesn’t fold over a waist band that hits right in the middle of my pooch. I also look for thick fabric that avoids any see-through issues and can also mold my body in a good way. Plus, the mesh inserts make for some ventilation perfect for those warmer summer days.

I’m really loving draped tees that are a little cropped. Don’t worry I’m not going to go out showing my bum. The thing is that I just don’t like the look of leggings and tunic-length-tops ON ME. When Shana had her leggings+tunic challenge I couldn’t stop laughing. I felt totally identified. Leggings with tunics have never felt like me. Believe me, I’ve tried but I always end up changing the top.

So for that, I love a shirt tied around the waist. That way I am covered without the need of a tunic. I usually go for a chambray shirt, but the gingham was a nice way to update the look for this season.

With fashion sneakers and a stylish backpack and I may be convinced of wearing leggings more than once a week. Even on a relaxed weekend day.

I also got some pics without the shirt so you could see the fit of the leggings.

Outfit Details

Leggings – Yoga leggings with sleek mesh inserts A few months ago I saw that these leggings had a ton of good reviews on Amazon. I kept them in my cart for months because I was very skeptical since they are only $20. They are my favorites now! Very thick strong fabric and the fit is great. They have been worn and washed and no issues so far. And I just noticed there’s like 10 different styles. Hover over all the pics and see for yourself. Get one or maybe all!!

Top – Kendall+Kylie Draped Crop Tee I’ve gotten a ton of compliments on this tee. It can be worn with anything. Not much into short tops? This one is perfect for you!

SneakersJ slides leather slip ons (limited sizes) – I love pointy shoes just for the fact that they elongate the legs, something that as a petite I really appreciate. These Dr.Scholls are very similar and comfortable. Similar and additional sizes here and here.

Bag Julian Nylon backpack – I’m a crossbody person but had to see for myself why all the TME team loves this backpack. I’m obsessed! The two colors available are to die for and I may be crying I didn’t see them when I was getting mine. Find even more colors (like a gorgeous Azure blue) right here.

Shirt – Banana republic (old) but this J Crew is almost identical.
