Reader Question:
Hey there,
I am in love with the bright jean/khaki trend this spring & summer, but as a 6'0" mom with a 38" waist, I'm having a HUGE problem finding colored jeans in my size & style. I've tried Gap, Talbots, Macy's – any suggestions?
Love your site, thank you!
Sarah
Answer:
Hi Sarah! Thanks for writing in! Your question is well-timed, because I just heard the following from IndiCustom Denim:
1. They are now doing custom jeans in colors!
and
2. They are having a Spring sale on all custom jeans – 30% off – with sale coupon SPRING12
IndiCustom is, as you can probably guess, an online store that makes custom denim. Sarah, I threw your measurements into their online designer just to be sure…and YES. They do have skinny jeans in bright colors available for a 6' tall mama with a 38" waist. Here are the current color offerings:
Pretty, no?
IndiCustom actually let me customize a pair for myself last month (more on that coming soon)…and so far, I've been really impressed. I actually screwed up the first pair (I'm not very good at precision tasks like taking measurements)…and it turns out that if your custom denim doesn't fit…they make you a new pair. Seriously. You just call and they ask questions about the bad fit, and then input all of the changes into their little computers and VOILA! New denim. The toughest part is the wait.
My other thought for you….is to try men's jeans. (No throwing things, Mamas. I actually HAVE worn guy's jeans, so pipe down.) But seriously: Gap's men's line is filled with bright, fun colors for denim and khaki pants. I think rocking a pair of colorful boyfriend jeans (or khakis) would be completely adorable.
Here's Gap's current lineup:
Gap's Khakis…
And denim…
Obviously, Sarah, if you want a well-fitting pair of skinnies, then IndiCustom would be your best answer.
Tall Mamas – are there any other places to find brightly colored jeans that fit? I wouldn't be surprised if I missed a spot…at 5' 2", I can barely see the top shelf in the supermarket…
xo,

this is the first time I have seen you admit to your ACTUAL height! xxoo
Omg I did, didn't I? Sigh. I'm getting sloppy.

Thanks! I’m 5’10”, and neither maxi dresses/skirts nor most “trendy” pants (aside from blue jeans) don’t fit me. I’ve never even considered having custom jeans made, so I’m going to check that out. That said, the best place I’ve found for finding other pants — khakis, dress slacks — is New York & Company. My inseam in 34″, and their long sizes fit me very well!
I adore my BDG colored denim from Urban Outfitters, and they are SO LONG. I’m 5’7″, so not exactly short, and I had to chop at least 6 inches from the bottom of both of my pairs. Give them a try!
I am 5′ 11″ and feel her pain. Finding tall jeans is hard. I live in my Gap (woman’s) tall, but they don’t make them bigger than a 16. I have in the past found cute denim at Torrid (never bought but know they have larger sizes and extended inseam). I have found tall jeans I liked from Alloy (junior sized so they don’t have huge hips a good thing) and I LOVE my skinnies from American Eagle. They only make extra long to a size 14, but their long length hits me at the ankle, they are cut nice and slim and last I looked they have colors. I have a white pair from them that I love… My biggest struggle has been that as a tall size 16 a lot of jeans are cut too generously and sag all over. Being my height I don’t think I’m a typical plus size as I’m built more slender than super curvy. Old Navy has the length she may need and if you needed a full hip they would probably like them on. For me I’ve learned that brand just doesn’t work on my body.
Another place is Delias: I’m not sure what her inseam is but in their colored denim they go up to 36″ in a size 19. (Yes, junior sizing. So that part sucks.)
I’m 6’1″ and the best place I’ve found for pants is Long Tall Sally. They’ve usually got a good mix of items that are in trend, (I.e colored denim) and also just good solid basics. They have 34″, 36″ and 38″ inseams in pants. They used to be called Tall Girl, and may still be in the states, in Canada now, I know it’s Long Tall Sally. And really since they were bought by long tall Sally the clothes has gotten way better. They have some awesome maxi dresses too 🙂 really, an ideal shopping solution for all the tall mamas out there!
Vault Denim sells a wonderful premium brand called Emerson Edwards that may fit. They are super cute, but are having a tricky time keeping them in stock! My favorite are the EE colored skinnies w/ the flap pocket – love them! I haven’t tried the skinnies on, but the regular EE’s are quite lengthy, so they may work – especially b/c you can go cropped/rolled with a skinny and look fantabulous! Cost is around $88 plus shipping (I believe it is $6.95)
