A Seriously Huge Round Up Of All My Favorite Holiday Dresses

Did you guys DIE over my sister’s “nursing-friendly”, sequin mini dress?  So freaking hot, right?  But she comes by the glam honestly  – even at three she would do just. about. anything. for a copy of Bride magazine.  My 8 year old tomboy self thought she was SO WEIRD.   I mean OK – nowadays I love a sequin as much as my sister does, but I’m more likely to stick them on my feet.  Overall, I prefer a, um….how should I say this?….cozier take on glamour.  And by cozy I mean wool.  No need to mince words:  I won’t suffer cold for beauty.

And one more of the shoes because GLITTER, OBVIOUSLY…..

I mean seriously.  I’ve been DYING (like really seriously drooling and dreaming) about glitter pumps since…hang on, checking…YES.  Since 2010.  Here’s proof.  I never did pick up those J.Crew glitter pumps, and have regretted it ever since.  So when KateSpade.com was offering 30% off a few weeks ago….WELL.  #gameover

But this look is totally my jam.  A soft, cozy dress, paired with sexy tights and ridiculous princess shoes.  (I also bought ridiculous princess glitter boots – no really I am NOT kidding, they were only $50.  I should be embarrassed by how often I’ve worn them.  MORE SOON.)

faux-fur scarf: old….but LOFT has a seriously great faux-fur scarf

dress: navy James Perse rib boat neck dress bought on super clearance, but Shopbop has it in black or oatmeal (and on sale!!)…or Nordstrom has a non-sweater, sleeveless version on clearance.

tights: ancient (like before R was born) Wolford tights…the closest I can find is Wolford’s Celina tights, although I think I like the Wolford Evelyn tights better, or even the Wolford Valencienne Stay Ups

shoes: Kate Spade Karolina Pumps – I like that this shoe has a slightly lower heel and a slightly rounder toe box than the newer versions available. (25% off with code HOLLYJOLLY)

necklace:  Stella and Dot Rebel Pendent

spanx:  (Cause it totally doesn’t work without it) High Waist Shaping Brief…but am thinking the High Waist Shaping Thong might be better

on Pax: H&M Blazer and pants….Gap gingham shirt….Red Plaid Bow Tie.red Vans

To warm this little number up even more (without loosing too much Holiday Holla)….faux-fur jacket.  #bammitybambam

faux-fur jacket: old….but check out Goodnight Macaroon’s Shaggy Faux Fur Short Jacket

dress: navy James Perse rib boat neck dress bought on super clearance, but Shopbop has it in black or oatmeal (and on sale!!)…or Nordstrom has a non-sweater, sleeveless version on clearance.

tights: ancient Wolford tights…the closest I can find is Wolford’s Celina tights, although I think I like the Wolford Evelyn tights better, or even the Wolford Valencienne Stay Ups

boots:  old Banana Republic…but DV by Dolce Vita makes a tall black boot with a wool heel that is similar

necklace:  Stella and Dot Rebel Pendent

My Top Ten Favorite Holiday Dresses

If you held a gun to my head and said, “S, you HAVE to buy yet another dress for the holidays…”  OKFINE.  #armtwisted  I’d buy something cozy, or something that I can throw over a turtleneck (I KNOW),  or something with a heart-stopping print or cool architectural detail.  Something…like…these:

1. Modcloth Lady Love Song Dress in Plaid, $89

Two words:  Sexy. Plaid.  Nuff said.

2.  All Saints Elgar Sweater Dress, $178  (20% off with code THANKS)

This is exactly the kind of dress I loved post-baby:  Soft, pooch-hiding, nursing-friendly, and a GORGEOUS color.  Wear with sexy tights for added oompf.

3.  BCBG Oversized Sweater Dress, on sale for $64

A dress this cozy and cute needs nothing but red lipstick.

4. Forever 21 Knotted Asymmetrical Dress, $22

Love the strategic ruching and uneven side slit.  Sexy and unexpected.

5. Bec & Bridge Dress – City of Roses Print, on sale for $127 (down from $213)

Bec and Bridge is one of my new favs – they always do really unique twists on classics.  I love the mod shape and cool print.  I’d wear with thick tights, tough-girl heels, loads of dark eyeliner, and a loooong knit scarf.

6. Missguided Queenie Long Sleeve Zip Waist Shift Dress, $56

I LOVE white for holiday parties, and this zip detail make this one so freaking cool.

7. Missguided Long Sleeve BodyCon Dress, $18

So very Alexander Wang, and SO many possibilities.

8. Anthropologie Polte Shift Dress By Marimekko, $345

This dress made me gasp aloud.  The print is stunning.  Truly a forever dress.

9.  Goodnight Macaroon Blank Space Mesh Top Asymmetric Hem Midi Dress, $220

Love the old-Hollywood vibe coupled with the modernist mesh cutouts.  A seriously high-impact dress. (25% off, one day only with code THANKSGIVING)

10.  Milly Bustier Strap Sheath Dress, $425 (25% off with code BF2015, or call Nordstrom – they’ll price match)

I have last season’s version of this dress and it is….perfection.  It is total and complete perfection.  Not only is it incredibly well-made, but it looks just as good all glammed up as it does over a t-shirt.  I’ll be wearing it this holiday season over a turtleneck (pics soon).

And Because We’re Slightly Insane ‘Round Here….More Dresses

SHOPPING.  ENABLED.  Welcome, holidays.  (The real curse is that I shopping enable myself.)

ps.  Almost all of these dresses are now part of Black Friday’s crazy sales (don’t trust the mouse-over prices – you’ll have to click through for sale prices).  If I was able to find the discount code I included it, but double check the retailer – pretty much everything is on sale.

pps.  We’ve been updating The Mom Edit’s Holiday Shop!  You can now find all of our holiday style guides in one place (both this year and previous years), gift guides for the whole family, as well as a shoppable boutique of more gift ideas we haven’t had a chance to write up.

  1. OMG! You nailed my favorite style!!! Cozy, chic, and WARM! Yet somehow sexy. Just looked to buy the dress you are wearing. Is it true to size? I am tallish (5’8″) thinnish but have hips and a little pooch (Spanx are my best friend) wondering if I can fit in the 2 (only size in black). Thoughts? Thank you- I just found my Christmas and date night outfit!!! LOVE it! xo

  2. Hi! I am loving the body con style but struggle to accessorize it, especially because these dresses are short and I would love to make them work appropriate. Any suggestions? Ps my favorite ones are surprisingly from Athleta!

  3. Okay, not sure if there is a better way to comment in for help. But I LOVE the dress ideas you’ve done in the past, I’ve been reading back in your blog and am already in 2011 – so yeah I’m hooked. But I have a difficult fashion/preggers dilemma. Despite our carefulness and responsible actions I’m pregnant (and very excited thank you)…. but our wedding was supposed to be in 9 months. Not exactly going to happen, especially in my traditional family. So flash forward to getting hitched this winter. Any ideas for wedding dresses that don’t completely highlight my bump but also don’t completely cover me in so much fabric you can’t tell I have shoulders, legs, etc.? Many of your pregnancy dress fashion tips I can look to incorporate, this is just an extreme event and I’m guessing I’m not the only one rearranging events. Thank you in advance!
