I finally got my hands on them — THE TikTok-famous Aerie crossover legging. They’ve only sold out nearly four times, and somewhere between the third and fourth restocks I wanted to give the crossover legging a try. When I couldn’t purchase the Aerie version, I found a pair at Beyond Yoga I tested out in this post. At the time of finishing up that post, however, I found them: The Aerie ‘OFFLINE Real Me High Waisted Crossover Legging’ was back in stock and I grabbed a pair as fast as I could.
Trending: Aerie Crossover Leggings Of TikTik Fame. A Review
Let’s refresh — the Aerie High Waisted Crossover Legging garnered massive attention when a TikTok influencer posted about them this past fall. People began buying them for their waist-trimming, curve-enhancing magic. When Aerie couldn’t keep them in stock, the masses turned to other companies making similar styles and began selling out those brands, too. When I got clued in on this phenomenon, I was fascinated. The moment I read about their supposed waist-trimming abilities I just had to know if they could work on my boxy frame. Plus, I just love a good trend!
Pulling the crossover leggings out of the bag, I immediately noticed two things: they were shorter than I was hoping, and made with a much thinner material than I imagined (which isn’t a bad thing, since I actually prefer lighter leggings over thicker pairs). I flipped over the tag and saw the leggings were described as a 7/8 length — now I understood why they looked so short. At the time of purchasing, only “regular” length was available in my size, but being 5’9″ I would have much preferred a “long” after realizing they were 7/8 length.
As I pulled them up over my legs I noticed they were quite contouring — the material is thinner like I mentioned, but not wimpy in how they hold and form around your shape. The crossover detail is far more dramatic than the Beyond Yoga pair — which low and behold, appears to be a part of their magic. The deeper V shape that forms across my midsection isn’t transforming me into Kim Kardashian, but it is giving a subtle appearance of a more trim midsection than I actually have. Standing normally, I was into it.
But since we’re here and debating if clothing can make you appear a certain way — let’s talk about the very tricking ways of angles.
The image on the left is me simply standing with relaxed hips, trying not to hold things in but also not be completely lazy — normal, I would call it. And the image on the right is after just a few rotations of my body, making a trimmer + longer + more toned version of me. That image on the right is not what I would look like if you saw me walking down the street!
There’s a good chance that some of these TikTok-ers (is that the right term?) are performing a bit of magic of their own in how they stand and pose in front of the camera. I can rotate my hips and legs just so to make these leggings seem more epic than they are if I’m just standing upright and relaxed. The professional photographer in me totally appreciates aesthetic and a more flattering angle, but when it comes to reviewing and recommending clothes — I want to shoot it to you straight.
A side angle: on the left I’m fully letting it all go, in the middle I’m standing up straight and more composed, and on the right, I’m flexing (well, trying to, HA). My butt goes from flat to somewhat having shape, and my legs grow longer and leaner.
All tricks aside, though, these ARE really great. Even with the magic of angles and posing, I couldn’t get the Beyond Yoga pair to look anywhere near as flattering as these, so that’s saying something. And honestly, this is as good as my waist area will probably ever look without having something squeeze me too tight. I would totally recommend the Aerie crossover leggings (probably even more so if you have natural curves) — they are fun, flattering, and definitely go further than my normal leggings when it comes to showcasing (hiding?) my midsection!!
If you are intrigued by this concept but are wanting to see a few other brands, head to this post where I round up a variety of crossover leggings at the bottom!
PS: In case you were thinking of going crossover leggings wild — Aerie is now limiting customers to three pairs of leggings (which totally makes me giggle a little, who needs more than
