Buying a bunch of maternity clothing to wear for only a fraction of your life can feel a bit daunting and not-so-useful in the long run. (Except for those cool, stretch band jeans…I’ve heard those are a must.)
But…grabbing a few core outfit pieces that can work both with a bump and without (postpartum, perhaps?) will make getting dressed SO much easier and make your wardrobe a little bit more sustainable (it will also spare some valuable closet space. Score.).
Factoring in minimalism and sustainability can be challenging during those nine pre-baby months, but there is a way to go about pregnancy styling that can make it a lot easier on the wallet, conscience and basement storage bins. Enter: super-conscious shopping (silhouette-wise). It’s easier than it sounds.
9 Non-Maternity Midi & Maxi Dresses Perfect For A Pregnant Summer (& Beyond)
Do breathable materials, easy silhouettes, some serious stretch, and a whole lot of flow sound pretty good right about now? I’m 1) assuming there was a resounding yes and 2) not pregnant, but I also think yes.
So if you’ve got a summer event coming up or just want to add a little something special to your dependable maternity basics, these nine midi and maxi dresses will absolutely do the trick…
1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 6 / 7 / 8 / 9
1. Free People Carmella Maxi Dress
This Free People maxi dress makes for such a sweet print and color combo for spring and summer. I’m getting sunset vibes alllll the way. It has that baby doll-style feel without being too precious. Love the look with sneaks (or some other super-comfy shoes) to tone down the girly and feminine, if you wish. So interesting with the sleeve ruffles and fun neckline. Amazing reviews. (Runs large.)
2. Significant Other Texas Dress
Uh, hello, gorgeous. Talk about some lovely stretch in a delicious fabric (aka “mid-weight lustrous slinky knit”). I saw an (eight month) pregnant woman absolutely shining in this Significant Other Texas dress on Instagram, so I HAD to include. I mean, how about this bronze color? I’m so in love and kind of dying to try it on. Looks like the perfect amount of stretchy in the belly area and so freeing in the arms/back. Sigh. So good.
3. Callahan Tie-Front Sweater Midi Dress
How cute is this peachy-orange midi dress?? The top ruching would complement a bump so well, along with the adjustable neckline. It just looks so buttery soft and at a sale price under $100 — yup.
4. Charlie Holiday Isabella Cover-Up Midi Dress
I’ve had my eye on this midi dress for sooo long (just can’t decide on a color but I’m dying for this cherry red now). The second tier under the bust is the perfect size for a growing tummy and there’s definitely material to spare. The “sweeping silhouette” is what’s pulling me in, too… love this in linen (ahhh) for the warmer temps.
5. Free People Adore Me Sweater Set
OK — hear me out. This set has the same deal as the second stretchy one but with a sleeves option (mind = blown) for two totally different looks. You’ll transition from warm beach days to chilly nights perfectly. (Hi, shrug.) Love the sandy, neutral color and the stitching details on the dress. That pull-on design is such a must for expecting mamas’ ease, as is the flexible fabric.
6. GAP Tiered Hem Maxi Dress
Gah, what a summertime dream. This tiered hem maxi dress comes in regular, tall and petite in three colors, and (I’d say) would go with ANYTHING. Seriously. (Especially the white.) The soft-knit cotton brings that airy and delicate sundress vibe with a touch of fanciness in the V-neck and tiered hem. Good with any shoe for an elevated or casual feel. On sale for under $80.
7. Free People Rio Sweater Maxi Dress
Oh boy, this is a good one. Again with another stretchy summer dream; a strapless maxi dress for ultimate simplicity (that is, if you’re ok with going braless). I love the maxi length and back slit up to the knees to let some breeze in (thank goddess). Six pretty colors in the light, knit sweater material. So effortless and boho-elegant. Also, tons of room for a pregnant belly — reviewers say it runs a little large.
8. GAP Organic Cotton Smocked Midi Tank Dress
This cutie is on sale under $80 with multiple five-star reviews. The smocking on this midi tank dress is so good and pretty maternity-friendly as it adds some shape right above the belly. Love this light denim chambray color, too. Oh, and it’s organic cotton. Yay!
9. Free People Terra Maxi Dress
This Free People dress is SO interesting (and I’m seeing ample room for a bump). The material looks like a cool summer hug (you know that feel?) and drapes in such a pretty way below the bust. On sale under $90 and comes in three good stripe combos. Loving the clog/jacket styling on the model.
Hope you enjoy!! Good luck to all of those expecting mamas out there. I’m rooting for you.
Xo,
Abby
