The Mom Edit’s 2020 Swim Guide is here!!
Per usual, we’ve spent weeks going through pages and pages of online inventory, reading reviews, trying things on, and going back through helpful reader comments from previous years. The result is this lineup of swimsuits. We know this summer is likely going to look very different from last year, but we have high hopes that the beaches will (safely) open…and if not? We’re all about the backyard buckets-of-water-as-pools. #justaddmargaritas
The Best Swimsuits For Women: A Peek At Our 2020 Guide
What’s new for swimwear in 2020? Well…animal print swimsuits are still a pretty big deal (and there are even more options this year), and bright bathing suits (think yellows and oranges) feel exactly like what we need right now. We suspect no one will actually be traveling this summer, but the stunning tropical prints are giving us alllll the vacation vibes anyway. And the one (new) category we’re really excited about?
BRONZE. We’re calling it the new black.
(And don’t worry, we still have a large selection of NOT boring black swimsuits, here.)
We ignored snake print swimsuits, however. How do you guys feel about them? I personally couldn’t get on board.
While we have the best postpartum, sustainable and plus-size swimwear sprinkled throughout the swim guide…we also pulled them together in their own sections, for ease of shopping. Click on the links below to be taken to that specific section:
Our Favorite Postpartum Swimsuits
Our Favorite Plus-Size Swimsuits
Our Favorite Sustainable Swimsuits
ONE IMPORTANT NOTE: Because of J.Crew’s recent bankruptcy announcement, our J.Crew affiliate links are working a little differently. If you click on a J.Crew swimsuit, it will take you to a Shopstyle page that may say “sold out.” This is likely just a glitch. Go ahead and click on the photo of the suit (or the “Buy Now” button) and you’ll be taken to J.Crew’s website as normal. We’re all crossing our fingers for J.Crew…and their swimsuits are one big reason: they’re a team fav.
As a reminder, find the full Swim Guide here. But if you want to see a quick sample of the kinds of categories we rounded up…here are a few of our very favs.

1. Striped Swimwear
J.Crew Cross-Back Bandeau One-Piece
This suit was a reader favorite last year, and sold out pretty quickly. I especially like strapless for the no-tan-line situation.
2. Lingerie-Inspired Swimsuits
Ralph Lauren Ottoman Boatneck One-Piece
Kind of unexpectedly sexy. Another reader favorite from last year.
3. White Hot Swimsuits
Look at this suit up close…it’s actually eyelet. We will forever love a pretty, textured suit.
4. Favorite Postpartum Swimsuit
Becca Double-Tie Front One-Piece
We narrowed down allll the post-partum suits and picked this as our favorite. These Becca suits are comfortable and flattering, and have been a favorite of new moms for years. This suit is just sexy enough, and the low neckline distracts from a soft, postpartum tummy shockingly well. It’s also pretty nursing-friendly, and the back is gorgeous.
5. Boho Babe Swimwear
Laura tested this Cupshe swimsuit last year and was shocked by how good it was. And more than 1,000 reviewers agree!! This suit is beloved by new mamas, experienced mamas, and sexy beach babes without kids. See Laura’s full review here.
6. Animal Print Bathing Suit
J.Crew Deep V-Neck French One-Piece
One of the best leopard print suits we’ve ever seen. This style is a team favorite, and this print has us all swooning. (See the red one on Laura, here…and a different animal print on Scotti, here.)
7. Favorite Sustainable Swimsuit
This suit is both sustainable and insanely chic. I tried it on, and if you are shorter, there won’t be as much space between the knot and the top of the waistband. The result is much more conservative than the photo…but still dead chic.
8. Bright & Bold One-Piece
Free People Ribbed Celine One-Piece
This is the suit I bought for this summer! I have it in a brown color that is now sold out, but it is one of the most flattering — and comfortable — one-pieces I’ve ever worn. Happily, Free People keeps coming out with new colors, and they’re all gorgeous.
9. Bronze Bathing Suit
Vince Camuto Wrap-Front One-Piece
Ahhhh…the color, the ribbed fabric, the things it does for a bustline….yup. This is a good one.
10. Color-Block One-Piece
Madewell Second Wave Cutout One-Piece
We’re more than a little obsessed with this suit. Not only is it super-flattering, it comes in both regular and plus sizes. You can see Kat in the plus-size version of this suit (in the now sold-out red and orange colorway). The brown trim is so fresh and is giving us all summer in the ’70s vibes.
11. Favorite Plus-Size Swimsuit
Eloquii Drama Ruffle One-Piece
This Eloquii suit is gorgeous and fun, and one of our favorite suits, period. How lovely that it also happens to be plus-size? This brand gets it right.
12. Pretty Floral Swimwear
Loft Beach Vine Halter One-Piece
This little vintage floral suit is just achingly pretty. Love.
13. Belted Bathing Suit
To quote Danielle: “These belted swimsuits are giving me life. I wanna lay on a fancy outdoor lounge, with a white floppy hat, big white sunglasses, this swimsuit and a pretty drink in my hand.” SAME GIRL, SAME. And I love that this suit comes in both plus-size and standard.
14. Pastel Bathing Suit
ASOS Broderie Tie Front One-Piece
ASOS is killing it with the swimsuits — plus, petite or regular sizes, they’re all so cute. The only downside? They’re so affordable that they don’t stay in stock long. We love this one for nailing that sweet but sexy vibe.
ps. ASOS also has a decent selection of sustainable swim, too.
15. Color-Block, Postpartum & Sustainable Swimsuit
We have a full review of Summersalt coming out soon (tall girls, short girls, plus size — we’re doing it all)….but based on the reviews, we have high, HIGH hopes. I love that Summersalt suits are all sustainable, and this one in particular is so insanely chic and flattering. This color-blocking is one of the best things to ever happen for postpartum mamas.
Fingers crossed that we’ll get a chance to show off our swimwear this summer!
xo,

Do you have recommendations for those of us with a long torso ?
Does the yellow free people suit have light padding in the bust area at all? And hows the sizing in their swimwear?
So great! Would love a section of underwire suits for those of us who need more support!
+1. Long torso here, too.
+Another request for long torso/tall suits!
Great picks! I’m still loving Athleta, you guys got me into their swimwear, it’s SO GOOD <3
xx
Yes, long torso! 5’11.
+1 for an underwire (or even just veryyyyy good support) section
