Crop tops? Pfft. Old news. The trend that’s got us really excited this spring is one that’s far more practical (yet just as sexy). That trend, my friends, is lingerie-inspired, vaguely balletcore, and something that can elevate your t-shirts & jeans to new heights: the Bra-Over-Shirt Trend.
This trend is a close cousin of the ’90s-inspired, cami-over-t-shirt trick, yet this new twist is decidedly Fashion Girl. Visible bras, but like you mean it.
Are you a badass? Probably. Could you rock some pearls with a bowl cut? Obviously. And would you ever leave a friend behind?
Hell to the NO. Bitches and bras 4 eva, baby.
Underwear As Outerwear: How To Rock The Bra-Over-Shirt Trend (According To TME Editors)
Obviously, a lacy bra is my top choice (if I’m going to buy something pretty, why not show it off?), but this look works with all sorts of bras, and bikini tops, too. Even boho-chic Anthropologie is doing it (is that a strategically tied scarf?).
Best of all, for this trend, you don’t even need to worry about whether or not your bra straps are showing because that’s the whole point. We do love a trend that’s fun, flirty, comfortable (I may never go back to the old way of wearing bras), and, best of all, practical.
Here’s how we’re doing it…
1. Try A Lacy Bra Over A Slouchy Tee
This is my favorite way to rock this trend. The bra cinches in the extra fabric, and the casualness of the outfit keeps it from being over the top.
2. Use A Strapless Bra For An Edgy Streetwear Vibe
Our girl Kat is queen of sexy new trends, and, true to form, she took this one in an enviable direction.
Kat says: Ummm okay, I was expecting that I wouldn’t like this new trend, but it turns out I’m obsessed. Which is no surprise, since I tend to be the gal who likes outfits that are a little more edgy. This gives me all the streetwear vibes, and I am here for it! Also I can attest that this trend is making waves in Nashville because I saw a woman at the Jim Gaffigan concert rocking her bra over her tee last night!
3. Layer A Pop of Color Over An Untucked Tee
Who would’ve guessed that Laura goes for such pretty, romantic, colorful bralettes? I fully expected hers to be black.
Laura says: I think this trend is easiest to try with a pretty bralette, personally, and it’s way comfier than wearing the bra underneath. And while I’m typically a fan of half-tucking tees, I think in this case it’s best to let the tee flow freely.
4. Make It A Seriously Cool Floral Moment
Bitches, bras, and…brims. As in, wide-brim hats. Cool-kid Amy makes a solid case for this fresh new combo!
Amy says: This trend is all about layering, and it really goes the distance when you throw a blazer on top. I love that it gives off an effortlessly cool, edgy and sexy look while still totally being modest.
5. Work The Hard-Soft
This textural twist on color-blocking (frilly ruffles + serious bra) works best with a densely structured strapless bra. The harder the better.
Linzi says: I am always the very first to jump on ANY new trend, and this trend is NO exception. Obsessed! The perfect way to feel more current while on the playground or while running errands on the weekend. This is definitely going to be my go-to look for spring!
6. Match The Shoes With The Bra
Leave it to Meredith to remind us that the power of this trend is that we’re actually sporting another accessory. Matching shoes and bags is soooo 2021. This year, match your bra.
Meredith says: I love a trend that allows you never to worry about bra lines. Bonus points when your heels match your undergarments.
7. Go Monochromatic
Monochromatic dressing can make anything chic. Here’s proof.
Scotti says: It’s not every day I get to dress like a sexy leprechaun, but I do enjoy it when it happens. This will definitely be my outfit for St. Patrick’s Day next year!
